FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT International Conference on ORGANISED CRIMEIN Courmayeur at the initiative of International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council of the UnitedNationsCrimePrevention and Criminal Justice Programme/ ISPACCentroNazionale di Prevenzione e Difesa Sociale/ CNPDS Courmayeur Foundation in cooperation with UnitedNations Office on Drugs and Crime/ UNODC, Within the vast panorama ofinitiatives for the protection of works of art and antiquities, ISPAC’sforthcoming Conference on “Organised crime in The theft, trafficking andfalsification of cultural property/heritage are illegal acts of aparticularly complex nature, with international ramifications and significanteconomic consequences, in which organized criminal groups of various types andorigins are often involved. The Conference will provide a forum in whichacademics and practitioners (enforcement agencies, museums), can get togetherand exchange ideas and forge partnerships with the objective of documenting,studying, curbing the problem. The first session of theConference will define the subject and demonstrate how difficult it is to limitthe area under examination, given the vastness of the issue. The second session will providean empirical overview at both national and international level by examining,among other elements, quantitative and statistical data, information resultingfrom criminal investigations, problems encountered in conflict areas,international cooperation. The third session will bededicated to international criminal policy tools and responses, regarding boththe normative framework for the protection of cultural property and theinternational conventions against organized crime. Policies linked to therestitution of works of art and antiquities will also be touched upon in thissession. The fourth and last session willdeal with the private sector (museums and auction houses) and the actions theyhave to undertake – through the adoption of codes of ethics/conduct – inorder to fight against the illegal trade/acquisition of works of art andantiquities. At the end of the Conference around table discussion will draw the final conclusions and present theprospective developments in this area. It will also enable advisers from the United Nations and other bodies conduct assessments of the justice systems, bringing them into line with international standards.
